The ALA announced the top books, videos and audiobooks of 2012 for children and young adults at its Midwinter Meeting yesterday, Jan. 28th.
The winner of the 2013 John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution for children's literature is The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate. Three Honor Books were also named: Splendor and Glooms written by Laura Amy Schlitz; Bomb written by Steve Sheinkin; and Three Times Lucky written by Sheila Turnage.
The winner of the 2013 Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children is This is Not My Hat, written and illustrated by Jon Klassen. Five Honor Books were also named: Creepy Carrots, written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown; Extra Yarn, written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klaasen; Green, written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger; One Cool Friend, written by Toni Buzzeo, illustrated by David Small; and Sleep Like a Tiger, written by Mary Logue and illustrated by Pamlea Zagarenski.
The winner of the 2013 Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults is In Darkness written by Nick Lake. Four Honor Books also were named: Aristotle and Dante Discover
the Secrets of the Universe written by Benjamin Alire Sáenz; Code Name Verity written by
Elizabeth Wein; Dodger written by Terry Pratchett; and The White Bicycle written by
Beverley Brenna.
