This Year's Winners

On Monday the American Library Association announced the top books, video and audiobooks for children and young adults - including the Caldecott, King, Newbery, and Printz awards - at its Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia.

The John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature was awarded to Neil Gaiman for The Graveyard Book.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children was awarded to Beth Krommesn for her illustrations in the book, The House in the Night, written by Susan Marie Swanson.

The Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults was awarded to Melina Marchetta
for her book Jellicoe Road.

The Coretta Scott King Book Award recognizes an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults. This year the King Author book winner was Kadir Nelson for his novel We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball
. The Blacker the Berry illustrated by Floyd Cooper and written by Joyce Carol Thomas is the King Illustrator Book winner.

Music Time at the Library

The 2009 winter/spring sessions of Music Time at the Library will begin on Friday, Feb. 6th at 11:00am. This is an opportunity for babies and toddlers, ages infants to 2 years, a chance to experience the fun and magic of music. Children and their caregivers are invited to come to the library to dance, sing and play instruments.

Tara Sulecki, teacher and owner of "Music To Grow On" will be leading the classes. This session's classes will be held on the first Friday of the month at 11:00a.m.

The program is free but due to space limitations, registration is required. To register visit the library or call 585-924-2637.

Chinese New Year Story Times

We will be celebrating the Year of the Ox with two special story time progams on Friday, Feb. 6th. Victor residents Joanie Towarnicky and Weh-Lan Heish will be presenting the programs.

This is an opportunity for children to learn a bit about China and Taiwan. They'll learn a few Chinese words and learn about how Chinese New Year is celebrated. The programs will conclude with a few Chinese New Year stories and a craft.

The first program is for children ages 3 to 5 and will be held at 10:00am. The second program is for children in Kindergarten and up and will be held at 4:30pm. Each program will last approximately 45 minutes.

These programs are free and open to the public. Registration is required.

  • Begins Feb. 23rd
  • Registration held the week before each class.

Toddler Time

  • For children ages 18-36 months & their caregivers.
  • Thursdays 10:30 -10:50 & 11:30-11:50
  • Fridays 10-10:20
  • Begins Feb. 26th
  • Registration begins on Feb. 9th.

Preschool Story Time
  • For children ages 3 to 5.
  • Tuesdays 10:15-10:45, 11:15-11:45 & 1:00-1:30
  • Wednesdays 10:15-10:45 & 11:15-11:45
  • Begins Feb. 3rd
  • Registration begins on Jan. 19th.
