Christmas Break Activities

We have some fun things planned for the upcoming December school break.  Check them out:

Wed. Dec. 26th1:00pm  Movie Afternoon - "Ice Age: Continental Drift"
     Manny, Diego and Sid embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift.  Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world.  Bring along a snack and a drink and enjoy the adventure!

Thurs. Dec. 27th  2:00pm  Lego Afternoon
     For kids ages 6 and up.  Join us for an hour of building fun.  We'll provide the Logos, you provide the creativity.  *Registration is required for this program.

Fri. Dec. 28th  11:00am  Family Story Time
     For kids 3 to 6.  The staff of Victor's KinderCare will be presenting a program of stories, snacks and a simple craft.  *Registration is required for this program.

Fall Story Times

It's hard to believe that a week from today is the kids will be back in school!  Where did the summer go?  We had another great one here at the library and hope you did too.  If the new school year is here that means that the fall session of Story Times at the library is right around the corner too.

Registration
for the Preschool Story Times for children ages 3 to 5 will begin next Tues. Sept. 4th. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:15 - 10:45 and afternoons from 1:00 - 1:30.  The classes begin on Sept. 18th and run for ten weeks.

Mother Goose Time for babies 0-18 months will be held on Monday mornings at 10:30am and begins on Sept. 17th.  These are drop-in sessions, no registration is required.

Toddler Time for little ones 18-36 months will be held on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10:30 to 10:50am.  These sessions begin on Sept. 27th.  These are also drop-in sessions, no registration is required.

Summer Reading Program Registration Has Begun!

Go to the Summer Reading Clubs home page and register for a Reading Club.  Find your age group from the tabs along the top and follow the simple directions.  You can begin registering the minutes you read beginning on June 24th.

It's also time to begin registering for our many Activity Days.  You can find out what's being planned here, then come to the library and register for the programs of your choice.  Activity Days begin the week of June 25th.

April Break Activities


We have a few activities planned for the upcoming April break.

On Monday, Apr. 9th at 10:30am we will be having Mother Goose Time for babies 0-18 months and their parents or caregivers.  Older siblings are invited to come along.

On Tuesday, April 10th at 10:00am we will be showing the movie “Chipwrecked”.  In this, the third of the popular Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, Alvin, Simon, Theodore and Dave find themselves marooned on a tropical island.  Their adventures include a dangerous volcano, a buried treasure and a spider bite that brings out an odd change in Simon.  Kids are invited to bring along a snack.  No registration is required. 

On Wednesday, April 11th at 1:00pm we will be holding a “Lego Afternoon” for kids ages 6 and up.  The library will provide the legos, you provide the creativity.  Registration is required for this program.

A Family Story Time for kids ages 3 and up will be held on Thursday, April 12th at 11:00am.  In celebration of National Library Week, we will be sharing some of our favorite children’s books of the past and the present.  No registration is required for this program.

Also this week we will be holding our annual National Library Week Buy-a-Book campaign.  Newly published children’s books will be on display.  Patrons are encouraged to look them over and choose one to buy for the library.  Bookplates will be put in all the books purchased and you can be the first one to check it out!  It’s a great way to show how much you love the library and books.

February Break Activities Planned

Looking for something to do over the February break?  We have activities planned for everyone!

Mon. Feb. 20th - 10:00am - Movie Morning - "Mr. Popper's Penguins"
   Tom Popper is a successful businessman who's clueless when it comes to the really important things in his life.  When he inherits six adorable penguins his life suddenly turns upside down.  Starring Jim Carrey, "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is a cool blast of fun for all ages.  No registration is required for this program and kids are invited to bring along a snack.

Tues. Feb. 21st - 2:00pm - "Mardi Gras Fun"
   For ages 6 & up.  Come celebrate Mardi Gras with us!  Play a few games, make some crafts and have lots of fun.  Registration is required for this program.

Wed. Feb. 22nd - 2:00pm - Games Afternoon
   For ages 6 & up.  Stephan Bonzo owner of the Game Gamut will be joining us to talk a bit about the history of board games and then show us how to play a few of his favorites.

Thurs. Feb. 23rd - 10:30am - Family Story Time
   For ages 3 to 6.  Come join the staff of the Fishers Run KinderCare for a few stories, a craft and a snack.  Registration is required for this program.  

Fri. Feb. 24th - All Day - Paws for Reading
   For kids in Kindergarten & up.  Our furry reading buddies will be stopping by to share some reading time with us.  Registration is required for this program.

2012's Children & Teen Award Winning Books

The American Library Association announced the top books, video and audiobooks of 2011 for children and young adults at its Midwinter Meeting in Dallas on Friday, Jan. 20th.

The winner of the 2012 John Newbery Medal, for the most outstanding contribution for children's literature, is Dead End in Norvelt written by Jack Gantos.  Two Honor Books were also named: Inside Out and Back Again written by Thanhha Lai and  Breaking Stalin's Nose written and illustrated by Eugene Yelchin.

The winner of the 2012 Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children is A Ball for Daisy written and illustrated by Chris Raschka.  Three Honor Books were also named: Blackout written and illustrated by John Rocco, Grandpa Green written and illustrated by Lane Smith and Me...Jane written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell.

The winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults is Where Things Come Back written by Daniel Handler.  Four Honor Books were also named: Why We Broke Up written by Daniel Handler, The Returning written by Christine Hinwood, Jasper Jones written by Craig Silvey and The Scorpio Races written by Maggie Stiefvater.

Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival Design Contest

The Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival is looking for artwork for their 2012 TBF program cover and 2013 TBF T-shirts.

Details and contest rules can be found here.  Deadline for the program cover design contest is Feb. 29th.  Deadline for the T-shirt design contest is Apr. 22nd.

This year's Teen Book Festival is Saturday, May 19th from 9:00 - 5:00 at Nazareth College.  Details on the Festival can be found at the TBF homepage.

Winter/Spring Story Time Sessions

Happy 2012 to you all!  Now that the holidays are behind us and things are getting back to normal, it's time to get back into the Story Time routine.  

Registration for Preschool Story Times for children ages 3 to 5 will begin on Mon. Jan. 23rd and will run through Feb. 3rd.  Classes will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10:15 - 10:45 and afternoons from 1:00 - 1:30.  The classes begin on Feb. 7th and run for twelve weeks.
